Soldier Drowned.
Private Francis William Poll, son of Constable Poll, Papakura, was drowned when a Bren gun-carrier fell over a 12ft bank and overturned in a stream during cross-country manoeuvres on Friday. Three other men imprisoned in the carrier were rescued and removed to the Kawakawa Hospital suffering from shock.
Pigs in Borough. A Masterton resident expresses the view that some relaxation of the bylaws should be made by the borough authorities to permit the keeping of pigs in the outer areas of the town. He points out that considerable quantities of skimmed milk are thrown away by residents who keep cows and if pigs were allowed to be kept in places where no offence to neighbours would be caused, the skimmed milk could be used to feed them. If this were done, at least for the duration of the war, some residents could find a further means of increasing the country’s production.
