GOLF SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. C‘Tlrries-Age” Sneclal.) In declaring the Greytown Golf Club’s season open on Saturday, the president, Mr J. Kiernan, expressed the hope that before the end of the season many of the young golfers who are now on active service would be home again. The four-ball competition was won by Mr G. Burns and Mrs Mead. Sport Activities. The various sports grounds around Greytown were fully occupied at the week-end. Army hockey and Rugby teams had a try-out, whilst basketbail teams also had their first practice. Home Guard. The Papawai rifle range was fully occupied at the week-end by members of the Carterton Company. • Successful Shop Day. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a successful shop day on Friday. ■ Mr W. Hutchings won the dinner and Mrs R. Brunton the cake. The takings amounted to about £l7. Plunket Society. At the annual meeting of the Plunket Society on Wednesday, Miss Hitchman will deliver’ an address. Personal Items. Misses Lorna and Belle Stewart, of Wellington ,were the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Gregor, West Street, at the week-end. Miss M. Eccles, of Wellington, was a visitor to Greytown for the week-end. Mr W. Wood, who has been visiting Auckland, has returned home. Mr R. Page, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of transfer to Nelson. A pleasant gathering was held at the Grey town Fruit Company’s orchard last week, when the member's of the permanent and seasonal staffs made a presentation to Private Marlin Hobson. The manager, Mr A. Wood, extended good wishes to Private Hobson and thanked him for his loyal service to the company. TOWN HALL TOMORROW NIGHT'S PROGRAMME The outstanding comedy, “Dulcy,” will be shown tomorrow night, with Billie Burke, Ann Sothern and lan Hunter in the leading roles.
The first of a series of old time dances will be held in the Wairarapa College Assembly Hall next Saturday. It is the intention of the committee to run these dances once a fortnight during the winter months. The floor of the Assembly Hall is in excellent order. An energetic ladies’ committee will be in charge of the supper arrangements. Mrs Ashton’s orchestra will supply the music.
