The Navy Department has disclosed that United States Navy gun crews are being placed on board American vessels to combat the submarine menace on the Atlantic coast. A navy gun crew was on board a vessel ■ torpedoed and sunk on April 20, when two members of the crew were killed. Forty-five survivors landed at eastern ports. When the submarine drew alongside the lifeboats after the attack to ask the .usual questions regarding the .vessel and its destination, a U.-boat officer apologised for the attack. “I am sorry we had to sink you, but this is war,” he said. '“Thanks for -the name of the ship.”
