The Governor-General and Lady Newall left Auckland last night to pay their first official visit to Eltham, Opunake and Patea. They will return to Auckland on Thursday morning.

According to a Montreal message, Sir Edward Beatty, for health reasons, has resigned the presidency of the Canadian Pacific Railways. He has been succeeded by Mr Dalton' Coleman, previously vice-president. Sir Edward remains chairman of the board of directors.

The death is announced from Sydney of Mr Edward James Watt, one of the biggest owners of racehorses in Australia and who left New Zealand during the Great War to reside in Australia. Mr Watt was born in Auckland 67 years ago and was educated at Christ College, Christchurch, and Jesus College, Cambridge. He was a member of the committee of the A.J.C.

There was a large attendance at the funeral of the late Mrs Emily Alsworth. The services at the residence and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. H. S. Kings. The pallbearers were Privates B. Treen, D. Cairns,' Messrs E. Allsworth, E. Grantham, A. Jones and K. Miller, grandsons of the deceased. Amongst others beautiful wreathes were received from the Gear Meat Co., the Kuripuni Methodist Ladies’ Guild and Trustees, and the Wairarapa Drovers’ Association.
