The latest Allied raids on Japanese bases in New Guinea are described by General MacArthur’s Headquarters as brilliants A correspondent at an advanced Allied base states that in the last two days our planes have destroyed or badly damaged at least 40 Japanese aircraft in attacks on enemy aerodromes in New Guinea. In the latest raid on Lae hits were made on 30 planes on the airfield and in an attack on Salamaua three Japanese fighters were shot down. MANY DIRECT HITS ON JAPANESE AIRCRAFT AT LAE. ENEMY RAID ON HORN ISLAND. (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Allied aircraft yesterday bombed and machine-gunned an aerodrome and scored many direct hits on a line of 30 Japanese aircraft at Lae. Fires were observed after the attack. Ground installations were also attacked. At Salamaua three enemy fighters were shot down. Eight enemy bombers, with a fighter escort, attacked our aerodrome at Horn Island. Only slight damage resulted. Tulagi, in the Solomon Islands, was also raided by the enemy, but without effect.
