BRITISH TROOPS

WITHDRAWAL TO MANDALAY. POSITION AROUND LASHIO NOT KNOWN. (British Official Wireless,) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) RUGBY, May 1. A Burma communique indicates that the position of the British forces has become more serious. It appears that they have withdrawn as far as Mandalay itself, while to the east the position around Lashio is not known.

The communique adds that on the Irrawaddy front the British withdraw-

al to the north bank of the Irrawaddy has proceeded successfully. A small Japanese party raided Monywa, about 50 miles north-west of Mandalay, but is being successfully dealt with.
