OPERATION OF NEW RATES STATEMENT BY MINISTER. EXCISE DUTIES & SALES TAX. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Asked today when the increased taxes would-be passed on to the public, Mr A. H. Nordmeyer (Acting Minister of Customs) said the increased duty on * cigarettes and tobacco and on imported wines and spirits was payable in respect of those goods which were imported after April 30 or were cleared from bonded warehouse after that date. The increased duty on beer was payable on beer which was brewed after April 30 and the additional sales tax was payable on goods sold by a wholesaler, or manufactured by a manufacturing retailer, after that date. All stocks already held by retailers and all other goods upon which tax has been paid or is payable at the. old rates must be sold at ruling prices, and if anyone suspects that the price of an article bought by him has been unjustifiably raised he should report the matter to the Price Tribunal.
