FARMERS’ UNION HEALTHY FINANCIAL POSITION. The annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on April 24, Mr A. E. Reid presiding over a good attendance. .Regarding members of the Home Guard it was thought many in this district would be unable to stand up to the work and that a medical examination should take place. Those unable to pass could then be drafted to the E.P.S. and help on farms if required, while the others were defending the country. The provincial secretary, Mr R. H. Williams, said the finances were in a very healthy state, with a good credit balance.
The meeting considered the figures very good indeed after many years of debit balances, and resolved to congratulate the finance committee and secretary on the result of their careful management. „ The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr A. E. Reid; vice-chair-man, Mr E. T. Bliss; committee, Messrs R. Bassett, E. R. Rose, K. Reid, J. P. Petersen, P. Bain, P. Hodder, F. Wadham, P. Reid, E. W. Allen, N. Peacock, G. W. Hart, E. Ordish, J. L. Fairbrother and P. Andrews; delegates to executive, Messrs A. E. Reid, N. Peacock,: E. R. Rose, K. Reid; delegate to conference, Messrs A. E. Reid, E. T. Bliss. “That Home Guardsmen be subject to a medical examination as to their reasonable fitness for the work.” “That representations be made to the Government that the price for potter bulls be increased to at least the price of £1 per lOOlbs for potter cows.” Messrs Reid and Bliss were appointed to wait on the banks and Post Office to see if it is not possible for them to remain open during the lunch hour on Fridays as this is a busy day for farmers and they find a difficulty in transacting their business.
