PARIS STATUES
TO BE MELTED DOWN. The municipal authorities of Paris, it is announced, in close collaboration with the Germans in occupation, have made “their” choice of the statues to be melted down in order to provide bronze for “French industry.” The first statues chosen are the Republic, on the square of that name; the statue of Voltaire, on the Quai Voltaire; Condorcet, on the Quai Conti; Corneille and Jean Jacques Rousseau, Place du Patheon; Berthelot, facing the College de France; and Etienne Dolet, on the Place Maubert, Boulevard St. Germain.
Even “Candide,” the weekly paper which for years has distinguished itself by its anti-British attitude and since the war by its German boot-licking, has to admit that the choice has not been entirely determined by esthetic considerations. The statues will be recognised as those most likely to give offence to the enemy and to such reactionaries as Vichy would like to win over to its side.
