A number of miners were trapped when heavy falls in the roof occurred in the Barnborough colliery, Yorkshire. Earth tremors were felt over a wide area. Rescue parties descended the mine and worked all night, but were unable to approach within 320 yards of the point where it is now known 17 miners are entombed. A miner who got Gut evaded the main fall. No other has been extricated so far.
