SERVICE MEN

ENTERTAINED AT Y.M.C.A. The increasingly popular function of the free teas to men of the services was again in evidence last evening at the Y.M.C.A. rooms, when one of the largest attendances cf service men partook of the homely and bountiful spread provided by the Masterton League of Mothers. Busy hands had tastefully decorated the tables, which, with the addition of salads, cold meats, cakes and dainties, looked a pleasing sight. ‘ ; The Rev. H. S. Kings, at present Padre attached to Headquarters Camp, represented the Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors and welcomed the visitors of both the Army and Air Force. He introduced Mrs L. B. Maunsell, president of the entertaining hostesses, who said they were pleased at being able to take some part in helping towards reminding the men of home and mothers. During the social hour, Mesdames Kellie and Jaine entertained with elocutionary items and Mrs Traynor with songs. Mrs Miller Hope and Miss M. Ivcson presided at the piano. The customary period of devotion was observed and the appripriate verse of the Battle Hymn, composed by Julia Ward Howe and quoted by the American Minister, General Hurley, at his civic welcome to New Zealand, was sung.

Thanks to the ladies, the Y.M.C.A., and National Patriotic Council, were expressed by Sergeant Caro on behalf of the Army and Corporal Harris representing the Air Force. An adjournment was made to the lounge, where, after some time spent round the piano in community singing, the happy gathering terminated and the men settled down to letter writing, reading and general chat.
