GREYTOWN

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held on Monday evening. There were present: Mr A. W. Horton (Mayor), and Councillors E. Balfour, I. Blissett. H. J. Farley, H. McKenna, A. Stuart, W. A. Tate and F. Wood. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors G. F. Eagar and H. C. Trotman. The foreman reported that 111 chains of tar sealing had been completed. The gas manager reported that everything at the gas works had been disposed of and there now remained only a few old meters and stoves to be collected.

The gas committee placed on record its appreciation of the services rendered by the manager, Mr A. G. Thomson. The Controller and Auditor-General forwarded the certified balance sheet for March 31, 1941. Messrs F. C. Bunny and S. R. Gawith waited on the council re water race rent charged to Mr Bunny. Mr Gawith stated Mr Bunny was suffering from an injustice as he was the only property owner inside or outside the borough who was charged this rent. He admitted the property was outside the- borough and slated that adjacent properties outside the borough were not charged. The Mayor pointed out that the two properties outside through which the race runs were in the seceded part of the borough and they had paid water race loan rates. Mr Bunny had never paid water rates on this property because it was not in the borough. After the deputation left the matter was fully discussed and it was resolved that council cannot agree to discontinue the charge or grant any reduction. The Mayor stated that a trial blackout would be held in Greytown on Sunday next from 8.30 to 9.15 p.m. He announced that this was a preliminary trial as a complete Wairarapa black-: out was pending. Maori rates extending over a period c-f nine years and amounting to £326 Ils 4d were written off. It was resolved that the gas manager's residence and gas shop be submitted for sale by tender with a view to wiping off the gas works debit. The Town Clerk reported that current rates collected to March 31, 1942, amounted to £4245 2s 3d, or 99.77 per cent of the rates struck. The credit in the District Fund Account is £1294 Ils lid, as compared with £837 13s lOd last year, an increase of £2Bl 4s 9d.

TOWN HALL DOUBLE PROGRAMME. There will be a double programme tomorrow night, headed by the thrilling saga of life and love in the Texas oilfields, “Flowing Gold,” with John Garfield and Francis Farmer, and the thrilling drama. “Flying Blind,” starring Richard Arlen and Jean Parker.
