PIRINOA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute held in the Memorial Hall recently. Miss Scrimgeour presided. Mrs Swainson and Miss Scrimgeour were chosen as delegates to represent the branch at the Federation Conference to be held in Masterton.

The members prepared and packed parcels for the local boys overseas. Competitions were held during the afternoon, and resulted: —Best knitted helmet: Mrs Priest 1, Mrs Tilson 2. Best bloom: Mrs Gaudin 1, Mrs Lovegrove 2. The helmets were forwarded by the president, Miss Scrimgeour, to the Merchant Navy. The members expressed hopes for the speedy recovery of Mrs Carter, who is an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, and the secretary was instructed to write Mrs Carter conveying those sentiments.

The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Gaudin and Sutton. Euchre and Dance. The Women’s Institute held a euchre party and dance on Saturday evening. The attendance was good. The ladies’ prizes at the euchre were won by Mesdames Mclntosh and Marshall and the men’s prizes by Messrs Spicer and Riwai. The competition for a ham was won by Mr W. Hutana, and that for chocolates by Mr Small and Miss S. Thomas. The mystery parcel fell to Mrs E. C. Holmes. The dance music was supplied by a local band, while Mi Graham Cardno was an efficient M.C.

Bonds for Bombers. The sum of £ 954 was invested at the local Post Office in Bomber Bonds. Vagaries of the Weather. There was a sharp frost in this district on Sunday morning. The gale on Saturday did not pass without some damage being done. Several trees were uprooted and small buildings damaged. School Committee. There was a small attendance at the meeting of householders on Monday evening. The outgoing committee, Messrs S. Mclntosh, Sutton, Duggan, Riwai and Carter were re-elected. Messrs Mclntosh and- Sutton were re-elect-ed chairman and secretary respectively. Personal.

Mrs Hall, Carterton, was the guest of her sister, Mrs S. Mclntosh, recently. , , Mr E. Taurau has returned home from the Masterton Hospital. Mr and Mrs J. Mundy are the guests of Mr and Mrs Pearce, Te Pare. The Misses Holmes have been visiting their parents, Mr and Mrs E. C. Holmes, Te Hopai. Mr and Mrs G. Hayne and Mr and Mrs J. Barr, Masterton, who were the guests of Mr and Mrs Marshall, Waitapu, have returned home. Mrs Roswald, Nelson, is visiting her mother, Mrs J. Duggan. Mrs Latham, who was the guest of Mrs Spicer, has returned to Wellington. Mrs Te Maari is visiting her daughter, Mrs N. Murphy. Wangaehu. The death occurred at Greytown on Sunday of Mr Ama Turei, who was well known in this district. “Bobrikoff” as he was familiarly known, served in the Field Artillery throughout the last war. He had not enjoyed the best of health for some time. He is survived by one brother, George, to whom much sympathy is expressed. Mr Joe Bragg has entered the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Mr Stan Hall has returned home from Dannevirke. Mrs P. Macdonald is staying with her son at Levin. Mr P. G. Macdonald is visiting Auckland and Whakatanc. Messrs J. Riwai and F. Busch were recent visitors to Wellington. Mr K. Matenga and his daughter, Mrs Himona, have returned from Gisborne. Mr Gordon Mclsaac, formerly of this district, had the misfortune recently to meet with an accident which necessitated his admission to the Palmerston North Hospital. Mrs J. Duggan met with a painful accident when the muscles of her arm were torn through being thrown against a building during a northwesterly gale recently.
