The Director of the Office of Facts and Figures, Mr Macleish, addressing the annual luncheon of the Associated Press, said that an Axis peace offensive can be expected this summer. He explained that such offensive, employing weapons, ideas and words, must be fought with the same weapons. “First line of defence in such warfare,” he said, “is the Press. The power of words to overthrow nations and enslave people is a power we do not see and do not believe in, but Nazi propagandists turned famous common sense French people against France and, from that moment, France wa’ lost.”
