CONFLICTING INTERESTS

OF ARMY & UNIVERSITY. PROBLEMS DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAMILTON, April 21. Ways and means of reconciling the conflicting interests of the University and the Army in relation to the training of students were discussed by Mr F. A. de la Mare, a member of the University Senate, at a -meeting of the Hamilton Rotary Club today. He asked if it was not possible to make provision to enable youths to prepare for war and at the same time maintain their education and qualify for their prospective civilian occupations. He suggested that the Army should go to the University and give students military training outside their hours, during weekends, and specially during the long vacation. There were advantages at the University for the training of officers and Army specialists. Under the present conditions, interruption of their studies for ( perhaps two or three years would have a serious and detrimental effect on the students and on the community. Special favours were not sought for University students, he said. Much the same arrangement could be made for youths employed in factories and learning trades. Mr D. C. Street said that many youths were receiving valuable education from the Air Department which they would not have received but for the war/
