TOWN CONVENIENCES

TEMPORARY & PERMANENT CONSIDERATION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. FURTHER ACTION DECIDED UPON. The provision of conveniences in Masterton received further consideration by the Masterton Borough Council last night, when it was decided to take steps to ascertain the cost of temporary latrines and to make inquiries in respect to a site upon which to erect permanent conveniences when conditions were more favourable.

The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, reporting on a meeting of the Works Committee and a Trust committee, said the latter was not favourable to the section alongside the old dispensary building in Church Street being made available. but had submitted a proposal for an island latrine in the middle of Church Street. Mr Jordan said he personally was not in favour of that proposal, as it was a definite obstruction in one of the main streets and he did not think they should make a window display of the conveniences. The Trust committee had been asked if temporary accommodation could be provided in the meantime on the section in Church Street, as there would .be no chance at present to get the equipment to build a permanent latrine. The Trust committee felt disposed to allow that to be done for the duration of the war. any proposals to be submitted to the Trust for its consideration. Mr Jordan said he would like to see the whole of the block bordered by Church. Bannister, Queen and Dixon streets taken over by the borough for an open space for the future. That possibility should be kept in view in regard to the selection of a site for conveniences. Councillor G. W. Morice said if conveniences were essential they should be in a place where they could be seen. The position had to be faced. He had not heard of a better proposal than the one to erect island conveniences in Church Street. “We want, more than one,” observed Councillor R. Russell. Councillor C. E. Grey said the best site to his mind was a section in the Church Street area and the land should be secured irrespective of whom it belonged to. Councillor W. Kemp spoke of the possibilities of various sites in the central portion of the town, mentioning in particular an area behind Mr Pither’s shop, which could be incorporated later in the proposed open space mentioned by the Mayor. On the motion of Mr Jordan the engineer was instructed to bring down a report as to the cost of providing temporary conveniences on the Trust Lands Trust section in Church Street for the consideration of the council as soon as possible. Mr Jordan said further inquiries should be made with a view to securing a permanent site for conveniences within the neighbourhood of the Post Office. This course was also agreed to.
