RACING CLUE MEETING OF STEWARDS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth presided over a meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Club held last night. There were also present: Messrs P. Bain, J. C. Harp, V. L. Robinson, J. Johnson, E. J. Matson, R. G. Kemble and the secretary, Mr H. Mortenson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs G. A. Vincent, W. C. Deller, L. H. Smart and W. H. Steel. The treasurer reported an overdraft at the bank of £6OO 16s lid. Mr Harp’s action in disposing of the crop of turnips for £l7 10s was endorsed. It was resolved to apply to the Racing Conference for Saturday, September 12 as the date for the annual race meeting. Messrs W. Howard Booth and J. W. Card were appointed to represent the club at the Racing Conference. R.S.A. RECORD SALE OF POPPIES. “'Poppy Day” was an outstanding ’ success in Carterton yesterday, when ' a record sale was achieved, 1400 being disposed of. The committee of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. is indebted to members of the Women’s Institute and wives of returned soldiers for the splendid canvass made. P. & A. SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING. Mr J. M. McLeod (president) occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, held yesterday. There was a fair attendance. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £394 Ils 6d. The annual balance sheet presented was considered very satisfactory. The net profit in the general show account amounted to £284 16s lid. The annual meeting will be held on Saturday, May 9. It was decided that the present officers and committee be recommended for re-appointment for the ensuing year but that any further nominations would be accepted. It was resolved to ask members under present conditions to pay their current subscriptions to enable the society i to continue its operations. • : One new member was elected. HOCKEY DALEFIELD CLUB. The annual meeting of the Dalefield Hockey Club was held at the residence of Mr H. E. Ordish. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The Dalefield Club was successful in winning all its matches last season. The election of officers resulted as follow: —President, Mr E. A. Heyder; , vice-presidents, Messrs W. Linton, A. : Gallon, J. Barnett, H. E. Ordish, C. Sayers, C. Knutson, M. Knutson, W. Neilsen, S. Gallon; secretary, Mr K. Ordish; delegates to Wairarapa Hockey Association, Messrs T. Hooper and K. Ordish. Subscriptions were reduced to 2s 6d on account of there being no club competitions. It is hoped, however, to arrange games against army teams. The cup for the most improved junior player was awarded to R. Sayers. Thanks are due to the ladies who supported the club, the Press, and to all who assisted in the past season. Shop Broken Into. Late last evening or in the early hours of this morning Hannah’s boot shop was broken into. When the manager, Mr Smith, arrived at the premises at 8 o’clock this morning, he found that the glass panel of the front door had been broken to allow an entrance to be made into the premises. Mr Smith states that a few boxes of boots bad been opened but as far as can be ascertained nothing was taken. The safe had not been touched but the till under the counter had been opened. However, no money had been left in the till when the shop was closed last night.
REGENT THEATRE “BUCK PRIVATES.” “Buck Privates,” which will be shown tonight is described as a “barrage of mirth and melody.” The leading roles are in the hands of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.
