Mrs T. Jordan, Lansdowne, has returned from a visit to Auckland.
The Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Marketing, left Wellington yesterday for the north.
Mr and Mrs T. T. Denbee, Renall Street, Masterton, have returned from a visit to Hawke’s Bay. The death occurred yesterday at Palmerston North of Mr Christopher Rowse, formerly of Mako Mako, at the age of 93 years. Mr S. R. McLaughlin, Taharoa, Longbush, who has been in the Manawatu district for some months, is now in Rotorua. The Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, Prime Minister, left. Wellington yesterday for the North Auckland district. He expects to return on Monday or Tuesday. The Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, left Wellington yesterday on a visit to several North Island hospitals in connection with emergency preparations. He expects to be away from Wellington for about a week.
The death occurred suddenly of Mr Henry John Edmiston, well known in the book trade in New Zealand and formerly principal of the flrm of Champtaloup and Edmiston, says an Auckland Press Association telegram. He was prominent in the Choral Society and a life deacon of the Baptist Tabernacle. His wife died seven years ago.
The United States Minister to New Zealand, Brigadier-General Hurley, will pay his first official visit to Auckland next Thursday and it is proposed to accord him a civic reception in the Town Hall. It is understood that he will be engaged on official business the next day and that on Saturday, Anzac Day, he will lay a wreath on the cenotaph, later leaving for a short visit to Rotorua, after which he will return to Auckland for a few days. In a closely-contested ballot Mr F. Craig, national secretary of the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Union and secretary of the Auckland branch, defeated Mr F. G. Young, M.L.C., for the presidency of the Auckland Trades Council of the Federation of Labour at the annual meeting of the council. The new vice-president is Mr Roy Stanley, national secretary of the Carpenters’ Union, who, in another close contest, was defeated by Mr Young for the position of national councillor on the Federation of Labour. The other nominee for the vice-presidency was Mr F. Hackett, secretary of the Auckland Tramway Union and national president of the tramwaymen's organisation.
