WEST SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE NATIVE PLANT MUSEUM. TO BE ESTABLISHED NEAR BATHS. Reporting to the last meeting of the Masterton West School Committee, the chairman, Mr E. R. Rogers stated that the carrying out of the ground improvements had been held up indefinitely owing to war requirements. The Wellington Education Board was considering a plan of temporary improvements to the grounds. The headmaster, Mr J. P. Farrell, in his report, stated that it was proposed to establish a native plant museum in an area adjoining the creek near the baths. It was intended to approach the Beautifying and Horticultural societies with a view to seeking their assistance. The scheme would be under the supervision of Mr Hesse, senior agricultural instructor for the district. Reference was made to the splendid services rendered to the school by Miss Marten, who had recently retired. A motion expressing the committee’s appreciation of her work was passed.

An invitation was received from the West Home and School Association for the committee to attend a meeting at the Side School on Tuesday to appoint a representative of the Side School parents to act on the Home and School Association.

It was reported that three members of the committee, Messrs E. R. Rogers (chairman), F. Shearer and E. Tooby were not seeking re-election. Eulogistic reference was made to the services on behalf of the school of these members, particularly to Mr Rogers’s work as chairman and also to Mr Shearer’s services in a similar capacity prior to Mr Rogers’s appointment. A motion placing on record the committee’s appreciation of their services was passed.
