NEW ZEALAND AIRMEN
NIGHT FIGHTING EXPLOITS. SUCCESSES OVER HOLLAND. (Special P.A. Correspondent.) LONDON, April 15. Two New Zealanders flying night fighters had combats recently over Holland. They were Pilot Officer D. J. Scott, Greymouth, and Sergeant B. Hay, Auckland. Pilot Officer Scott shot down a Dornier 217 over its own aerodrome last week. When intruder-patrolling he sighted a Nazi at 1000 feet and stalked him for a quarter of an hour. Meanwhile, the Nazi, oblivious of the New Zealanders’ presence, had left on his landing lights. Pilot Officer Scott attacked from the starboard quarter and gave a seven-second cannon-shell burst. He saw the Nazi crash down in flames. Another night Scott sighted two Nazis circling before landing, with their landing ligh showing. He attacked one which immediately put out its lights, so he chased the second, which also nut out its lights, but not before Scott had fired a five-second burst. He saw the shells striking the Nazi. . Sergeant Hay also damaged a Heinkel 111 after a similar combat. Scott has now shot down two “confirmed,„ two “probables,” and two “damageds. His logbook shows 700 hours’ operational flying in Hurricanes. He has been recommended, for a decoration.
