NORMANDIE FIRE
REPORT TO COMMITTEE OF CONGRESS
HANDLING OF THE VESSEL CRITICISED. CARELESSNESS & LACK OF SUPERVISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April 15. The House of Representatives Naval Sub-Committee has issued a lengthy report on the Normandie fire. The report sharply criticises the Government’s handling of the vessel. It is disclosed that orders had been given for the Normandie to sail on February 14, only five days after the disaster. The report asserted that the fire unquestionably started from sparks 1 from a blow torch, which ignited * life-preservers. The investigation failed to disclose any persons intent on sabotage, and the fire was not wilful but, said the report: “There is no escape from the conclusion that the cause and consequences of the fire are directly attributable to carelessness and lack of supervision. However, opportunities for sabotage or almost any subversive activity were abundant on the Normandie.”
