LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MEETING IN MASTERTON IN CASE OF RAIDS. SIMPLE PRECAUTIONS EXPLAINED. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs L. B. Maunsell presided over a very large attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Keltic, Rich and Brown.

A short induction service in connection with new members was held. A letter was received from the Townswomen’s Guild inviting all members to be present at a social gathering to be tender to “Aunt Daisy in the Opera House on April 24, the proceeds from which are to go to the patriotic appeal. Two solos by Mrs Speight and recitations by Mrs R. Miller were much appreciated. It was announced that the League would be in charge of the patriotic shop on Tuesday, April 21, and would provide the soldiers’ tea in the Y.M.C.A. on Sunday, April 26.

Mrs Maunsell introduced Miss F. Pickett, of the Wellington Health Department, who gave a very instructive talk on simple precautions to be taken in case of an air raid. The Health Department, she said, would be responsible for sanitation and hygiene. Its officers were visiting every house and flat in Wellington to instruct people in temporary sanitation and in regard to the supply of water should any disruption occur. Simple treatments for shock, wounds and burns were explained and the necessity of boiling water to prevent an epidemic was emphasised. Miss Pickett urged each one to ascertain her job and then go ahead and do it, as idleness often caused panic. Mrs Maunsell thanked Miss Pickett for her address and said that she was sure all had learned a great deal from the address. The tea hostesses were Mesdames McNeur, E. J. Brown, Marchbank and Hunter.
