BREN-GUN CARRIER ACCEPTED BY MINISTER OF DEFENCE. HANDED OVER BY MR GODFREY TAYLOR. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. A Bren-gun carrier, presented by residents of the Pahiatua disti ict, was driven up to the grounds of Parliament House today and formally accepted on behalf of the Government by the Defence Minister (Mr Jones). It was handed over by Mr Godfrey Taylor, representing the Mayor and councillors of Pahiatua. <■ -n i,- < Mr Taylor, a resident of Pahiatua for 40 years, was the originator of the gift, offering £5O if 19 others would do the’same The result was not up to expectations, but the Mayor took up the proposal, and without a direct canvass, £1,154 was raised. A small balance required was made up by the Government. Mr Jones asked Mr Taylor to convey to the Mayor and citizens of Pahiatua the thanks of the Government. There is a suitably inscribed plate on the front of the carrier. Mr Jones said he was very proud of what New Zealand was doing in connection with the war effort. “We are getting stronger every day,” he said, ‘ but we have still got a big job ahead of us in defending this country. We are even going further than that. We arc not only going to defend this country, but are also going to take back from our enemies all they have taken from us.” ______________
