ENEMY BOATS
SUNK IN MANILA BAY BY FIRE FROM AMERICAN FORTS. AIR ATTACKS ON CORREGIDOR CONTINUE. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April 13. A communique regarding the Philippine theatre states: “Fire from Corregidor and other. Manila Bay forts sank a number of small Japanese boats in Mariveles Harbour and set Are to several others. There were ten Japanese air raids on Corregidor during the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 22' in two days. Our anti-aircraft fire again kept hostile bombers at a high altitude. Our installations sustained only minor damage. There were some casualties. Communication between Cebu and Corregidor has been cut off for the past 48 hours, so nothing is known at present of the situation in Cebu.” LOST AMERICAN TRANSPORTS. The communique continues: “The War Department today announced the loss, by enemy action in the Far East, of two freighters in the Army transport service, the Liberty and the Meigs. The Liberty was torpedoed twice by an enemy submarine on January 11, twelve miles from Bali. The vessel was beached and 53 members of the crew and one passenger were res-: cued by Dutch planes. Some were flown to Surabaya and some to Bali. There was no loss of life. The Meigs was sunk by planes_in Darwin Harbour on February 19. Tne master of the vessel, Captain Link, was wounded and later died. One member of the crew was killed and eight were wounded.”
RABAUL RAID
LARGE ENEMY SHIP SET ON FIRE. SYDNEY, April 13. Allied planes followed up Saturday’s destructive blows against the Japanese bases with two more bomber attacks on shipping in Rabaul harbour yesterday. A direct hit was scored on the stern of a large enemy ship, which appeared to be on fire when the bombers left. A near miss also sent debris flying from the same vessel and two other near misses probably damaged her below the waterline. A second attack was carried out later, but no details have been received.
