VEGETABLE GROWING
OPPORTUNITY FOR MAORIS. SCHEME OF GREAT POSSIBILITIES FOR FUTURE. The desirability of growing vegetables was brought under the notice of Maoris at Te Ore Ore by Messrs Ben Roberts and J. Robertson, members for Wairarapa and Masterton respectively, at a meeting held this week. There is likely to be a great demand for vegetables in the future. The point was stressed that a scheme to grow vegetables started as a war effort, could be continued after the war and extended, so that Maoris could grow vegetables on their own ground and supply the markets, rather than allow their ground to be leased to others for the same purpose. Such a scheme would aim at the Maoris attaining self-sufficiency. There was no reason why fruit could not be grown as well. It was emphasised that in carrying the scheme into effect the Maoris should try to stand on their own feet, though some assistance might be possible in certain cases.
As a result of the meeting several offers of land were made for the commencement of operations.
