LADIES’ HOCKEY
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING. SEASON TO OPEN MAY 2. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Ladies’ Hockey Association was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms last evening. Owing to transport difficulties the attendance of delegates was limited to those from the northern end of the district. The annual report disclosed a satisfactory past year’s record, while the balance sheet revealed a healthy credit of over £3B. The Excelsior Club was congratulated on winning the senior championship for the fifth successive year and the junior championship for the fourth time in the past five years. The Excelsior Club also won the senior and junior knock-out competitions. The Greytown Club won the senior six-a-side tourney and Excelsior the junior contest. For the first time for some years, if not in the Association’s history, the senior representatives teams were selected by ladies and Misses Vincent, Stewart and Spiers (now Mrs E. L. de Berry) were congratulated on the very general satisfaction their selection gave. Mrs Te Tau and Mrs Southey also deserved a word of praise for their successful selection of the junior representatives. The need for the Association to have playing fields of its own was paramount though it could not move in the matter at present. Thanks were expressed to many helpers and to the officers of the Association.
The election of officers resulted: — Patron, Mr J. Robertson, M.P. (reelected); president, Mr F. Madsen (reelected); vice-presidents. Messrs A. Innes, L. R. Wilton, C. H. Spiers, D. McKenzie, K. Goodin, G. Maloney and B. Roberts, M.P.; delegate to New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association, Mr C. Spiers; postponement committee, Messrs Simmonds, Fisher and Bliss (reelected); secretary, Miss B. W. Vincent (re-elected). The appointment of selectors and the six-a-side tournament committee was held over in the meantime.
It was decided to open the season on May 2, nominations to close on Wednesday, April 22. The purchase of bonds to a value of £25 was agreed to. ' The question of transporting teams to fulfil their fixtures was fully discussed. It was reported that no special travelling facilities would be available this year, and as a consequence the Featherston and Martinborough clubs would be unable to participate in the competitions. The position of Greytown was uncertain both as regards trips to and from that town. A committee composed of the president, secretary and Mr C. Spiers was appointed to thoroughly investigate the position and report to the next committee meeting.
