ATTACKS ON MERCHANTMEN BY U-BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) NORFOLK (Virginia), April 8. The Navy announced that enemy submarines shelled and torpedoed two additional merchantmen off the Atlantic coast last week, causing a probable loss of 37 lives. Savage shellfire sank a small freighter on the night of April 2, killing 17 of the crew. Eleven others are missing, and there are only three known survivors. On April 4 a pair of torpedoes transformed a medium-sized ship into an inferno. Twenty-eight survivors from this ship have reached here, and nine are missing.
