INDOOR BASKETBALL
SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED INCREASE IN GIRLS’ TEAMS. RESULTS OF LAST NIGHT'S GAMES. The indoor basketball season was officially opened last evening by Mr Hayden. Apologising for the absence of the president (owing to ill health). Mr Hayden urged the girls’ teams to co-operate with the basketball committee to make the season a success. Thanks were extended to the Borough Council foi the use of the Town Hall, the boys who had marked the floor and assisted in making the back-boards. “We are fortunate this year in having a further increase in the number of teams,” said Mr Hayden. “Commencing four years ago with seven teams we now have 21 girls’ teams in this year’s competition. Unfortunately the ranks of the men’s teams have been depleted. Out of the 31 players we had last year twenty-five are in camps, and of the six remaining two are to enter camp next week, three are under age and one is over the age limit. That surely must be a record for any one sport. Soldier players have entered teams in the competition. In concluding Mr Hayden wished all the teams the best of luck and a successful season. The following are the results of the games played: Ladies' Section. C. Smiths beat Banks 7/6; W.F.C.A. beat State Kitchenette C 7/4; Rangers beat United 13/10; Garages beat P. and T. 18/2; Codys beat Woolworths 4/1; Sparklets beat McKenzies 14/8; Lancers beat State Kitchenette A 15/4; Cathies B beat Vesta 6/0; State Kitchenette B beat McDuffs 6/3. Men’s Division. Ruahine A beat Interhouse 6/5; Solway beat Army Service Corp 20/2.
