ALFREDTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING 'OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute there was a very small attendance. Miss Hazel Johnson, of Massey College, gave a very interesting demonstration of carding and spinning wool. Miss Johnson also described the vegetable dying of the wool. In the competitions the following were successful: —Knitting, scarves, Mrs Low 1, Mrs Hull 2; shortbread, Mrs Yarrell 1, Mrs Seymour 2, Mrs Low 3; best bloom, Mrs Dickens 1 and 3, Mrs Low 2. . A new member, Miss M. Edmonds, was welcomed. Two pullovers were received from Mrs W. Rolls. Red Cross Society, Members of the Red Cross Society met on Saturday to complete the work in connection with a bundle of garments for evacuees. Mrs Amundsen gave an interesting talk on the care of maternity cases. Mrs Treadray, of Wellington, gave a demonstration on papier mache work, describing how splints and various articles used in hospitals could be made. Mrs M. Stone-Wigg thanked Mrs Treadray for her valuable information. Patriotic Society’s Card Party. A very enjoyable card party was held by the Patriotic Society on Saturday night. The card winners were: Ladies, Mrs R. Low; men, Mr E. Seymour. In the competitions a box of chocolates presented by Mr B. Napier realised £2 Ils and was won by Mr C.> Algie. A goose donated by Mr G. Napier was won by Mr J. Hartley, the sum of £1 6s 8d being obtained. Donations were received from Wellwisher and Mrs Taverner, 5s each. The following goods were donated and sold by auction: —Carrots from Miss Hare realised Is 4d;4olbs potatoes and cabbages from Master C. Leachi 19s 6d; two fowls from Mrs Leach 13s 6d; two bantams from Mr W. Walker, 7s 6d; grapes from Mrs G. Napier ss; flowers from Mrs Cooper, Senr., ss. The hostesses were Mesdames Walker, Dickens and McDonald. The takings for the evening amounted to £l2 3s 6d. Personal Items. Mrs Edmonds, of Palmerston North, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Algie. Miss Carlyle is the guest of Mrs Dickens. Miss B. Edmonds spent the weekend with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Edmonds. Mr and Mrs Brooking, of Dannevirke, are the guests of Mr and Mrs C. Walker. Mrs Elsmore, of Palmerston North, is visiting Mrs S. Edmonds. Mr - S. Edmonds is spending a holiday at Taupo. Mrs Hood is visiting Mrs A. Edmonds. L/Cpl. F. Nordloff and Pte. N. Napier spent the weekend with their parents.
