BATAN ASSAULT
MORE RESERVES THROWN IN BY JAPANESE HEAVY LOSSES SUSTAINED BY BOTH SIDES. SOME ADDITIONAL ENEMY PROGRESS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) RUGBY. April 7. A Washington communique states: “In the Philippine theatre superior enemy forces, supported by tanks and artillery have continued to attack the centre of our line in the Batan Peninsula. The Japanese have thrown in fresh reserves and have made some additional progress. Heavy losses have been sustained by our forces and by the enemy. Japanese divebombers are assisting in the attack, dropping bombs and mach-ine-gunning our front line soldiers. “The enemy again bombed one of cur field hospitals, inflicting heavy casualties among the wounded soldiers undergoing treatment there. “There was no air attack on Corregidor Island today, but all our harbour defences were shelled intermittently by artillery located in Cavite.”
