Odd Fellows’ Conference, The centennial conference of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows opened in Nelson yesterday morning, and was presided over by the Grand Master, Bro. N. B. Bellringer, New Plymouth. A- civic welcome was given by the deputy mayor, Mr Hurst, and Mr Atmore, M.P. A commemorative service was held oh' Sunday to mark the founding of the first New Zealand lodge in Nelson 100 years ago. Explosion in Air Raid Tunnel. One man was seriously injured and two others had narrow escapes when a blasting charge exploded while they were working at the head of one of the air-raid shelter tunnels being driven i under Constitution Hill, Auckland. The victim was Jarl Staff, single, aged 58, labourer, who suffered a ruptured kidney, and is in a serious condition. The other two workmen escaped without injury. The accident, occurred when the lights in the tunnel went out, almost at the same time as the fuse was lit. The men were .working at the time about 80 feet in, and the usual board shelter to confine the blast had been placed in position at the mouth, further darkening the shaft.
