CHASE IN CLOUDS
AFTER FUGITIVE ENEMY FIGHTERS OFF SOUTH COAST OF ENGLAND ONE SENT CRASHING INTO SEA. NEW ZEALAND’S PILOT'S SUCCESS (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) RUGBY, April 6. Tn thick mist, off the South Coast this morning, a Spitfire pilot of the Fighter Command, a New Zealand Flight Lieutenant, saw two Messerschmitt 109 s 600 to 700 yards ahead. He gave chase, but lost sight of the enemy in the mist. When he spotted them again, the Messerschmitts were hurrying for cloud cover. The Spitfire pilot hung to them until he found them in a clear patch. He then got in a burst at one which was diving towards the sea. “Momentarily the Messerschmitt flattened out just above the water,” said the pilot; “then I saw its tail kick up and it went smack down, with a large splash, bounced ten yards and then went straight into the sea.”
