The Prime Minister (Mr W. L. Mackenzie King) has announced the formation in the United Kingdom of the first Canadian Army under the command of Lieutenant-General A. G. L. McNaughton. This announcement is coincident with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Mr King said: “The establishment of the first Canadian Army overseas creates a thoroughly modern, self-con-tained, hard-hitting fighting force, capable of operation in any theatre. It is particularly strong in armoured equipment.” Acting Lieutenant-General H. D. G. Crerar has been named commander of one corps of the army. The commander of the other corps will be named in the future. Probably he will be MajorGeneral E. W. Sansom. Mr King’s statement disclosed that a new armoured division and a new tank brigade are going overseas in 1942.
