AMERICAN BOMBERS

SMASHING NIGHT RAID ON RANGOON DOCKS LARGE FIRES LEFT BLAZING. COMMUNICATIONS RACE IN BURMA. (By Telegraph— Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 5. New Delhi reports that United States bombers, operating from bases in India, carried out a smashing night raid on the docks at Rangoon, and set three large fires blazing. All the planes returned safely. The Chungking correspondent of the United Press of America says military circles there assert that the British “scorched” Rangoon so thoroughly before their withdrawal that the port is still useless for the Japanese. The Japanese in Burma are consequently suffering from an acute shortage of bombs, which can be supplied only by sea, and therefore the air raids against the Allies are comparatively small, in spite of the Japanese air superiority. The Japanese are desperately trying to rehabilitate the port before the Allies complete the construction of the new link between India and the Burma Road, the correspondent says. Chinese military sources and members of the American Volunteer Group explain that the outcome of this race will determine the outcome of the Battle of Burma. '
