OFFER BY OPPOSITION LEADER

HELP ON RUSH OCCASIONS WITHOUT PAY. PRIME MINISTER’S REPLY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An offer to organise an emergency group of men at each port who would help watersiders to load cargoes for Great Britain on rush occasions without any remuneration is made by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, in a telegram to the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. The Prime Minister has replied by telegram stating that he will be" pleased to discuss the proposal with Mr Holland, the Waterfront Commission and the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb. He has asked Mr Holland to submit details of his proposals.

CHALLENGE BY UNION OFFICIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The following telegram arising from the offer of the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) to the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) regarding waterfront work, has been sent to Mr Holland by Mr Flood, president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union: “Holland, M.P., Christchurch. Rates of pay of 7s per hour for Sunday, Christmas Day and Good Friday by agreement with shipowners. Challenge you to work on the waterfront with myself for soldier’s pay for duration of the war, all other sources of income of both parties to be given to State as ouk war effort.”
