OF U=BOAT WARFARE LIFEBOATS SHADOWED FOR DAYS. IN HOPES OF SINKING RESCUE SHIPS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 4. The Navy Department today admitted the sinking of two mediumsized Allied merchantmen in the Caribbean Sea on February 22 and March 3, with the loss of one life. The survivors of one vessel, who reached the United States, revealed a new feature of the submarine warfare, declaring that the U-boat trailed the lifeboats for five days, apparently hoping to sink any friendly vessel that might approach to rescue the survivors. Twice during their trip of 540 miles the survivors saw friendly ships on the horizon, but allowed them to proceed without signalling, because the U-boat was relentlessly following in their course. When they were finally picked up the U-boat was several miles behind, and the men told the skipper of the rescue vessel to “get out of the way in a hurry,” which he did safely.
