Miss B. Miller is the guest of her sister, Mrs H. Cooper, Stronvar. Mrs Williams, Poverty Bay, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Ralph Bunny, Te Ore Ore. Mrs W. K. Logan, North Auckland, is staying with Dr, and Mrs A. Hosking, Masterton. Mrs T. Jordan, The Terrace,. Lansdowne, is visiting her daughter, Mrs John Lampen, Auckland. Mrs J. Mills, Day's Bay, is staying with her mother, Mrs A. P. Bennett, Essex Street ,Masterton. The death occurred on March 24 at Claygate, England, of Mrs Louisa Elizabeth Lewis, widow of the late Mr Anthony Lewis, of Eketahuan, at the age of 83 years. Mr and Mrs W. Barras, of Khandallah, announce the engagement of their only daughter Vurla Alice to Lance-Corporal H. S. (Bert) Garrity, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. C. Gairity, of Dyerville. Mr J. M. Park, Commissioner of Taxes since December, 1937, completed 40 years’ service with the Land and Income Tax Department on January 3. Consent to his retirement has been declined in terms of the Superannuation Emergency Regulations, 1940. Major S. H. Gould has been appointed to the rank of lieutenantcolonel (temporary) according to the latest issue of the New Zealand Gazette. Lieutenant-Colonel Gould, N.Z.T.S.. is officer commanding the Fourth Battalion, Wellington Regiment, as area commander, with headquarters in Wanganui. The funeral of the late Mr W. E. Toxward yesterday afternoon was largely attended. The Ven Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducted the service at the Chapel and that at the Soldiers’ Plot in the Masterton Cemetery. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. Messrs A. H. Marsh, W. E. Boyd, A. Heard. B. Nowell, J. Kerslake and W. R. McMinn acted as pall-bearers. There was a large attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the lateMrs E. Horner. Among a large number of floral tributes were w-reaths from the Glenwood Hospital staff and directors of Tikitapu Estates, Ltd. The Ven Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated at the residence and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs K. Meredith, D. Meredith, Guy Wagg, H. Nitz, S. Divers and F. B. Tatham.
