INCREASE IN CYRENAICA ATTACKS ON ENEMY BASES. LARGE VESSEL BOMBED IN MEDITERRANEAN. (British Official Wireless.) ' (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) RUGBY, March 29: A R.A.F. Middle East communique states: “There has been an increase in air activity in Cyrenaica in the last 24 hours. Benghazi was bombed and nearby camps were machine-gunned on Friday night, while our fighters attacked landing-grounds at Derna and Martuba. “On Saturday bombers of the South African Air Force, escorted by fighters, attacked the west landing ground at Martuba. Hits were scored on aircraft on the ground. Several units of a formation of Messerschmitt 109 s, which attempted to intercept our bombers, were probably destroyed. “During the day one Messerschmitt 109 and one Macchi 200 were shot down by our ground defences. One of our torpedo-carrying aircraft successfully attacked an 8,000-ton cargo vessel in the Central Mediterranean. “Four of our aircraft are missing from all operations.”
