GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE DEFEATED SMALL POLL IN GRANTHAM. WINNER SUPPORTS CHURCHILL. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) LONDON. March 26. In the Grantham by-election, Mr W, D. Kendall, Independent, with 11,758 votes, defeated Sir Arthur Longmore, Conservative, with 11,391 votes. This is the first time on which a National Government candidate has been defeated since the outbreak of war. Only about 45 per cent of the electors voted. Mr Kendall is managing director of an engineering firm in Grantham employing 5,000 workers. He had declared his support for Mr Churchill, but said: “Parliament needs a man to focus attention on inadequate war production.” After the result of the by-election had been announced, Mr Kendall issued a writ for alleged libel against Sir Arthur Longmore, but later withdrew it.
