WESTFIELD STRIKE
APPLICATIONS MADE FOR REHEARING CASES OF MEN NOW IN GAOL. NO OPPOSITION OFFERED BY CROWN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. When applications came before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., this morning for a rehearing of cases affecting 289 Westfield freezing workers now serving a sentence of a month’s imprisonment, Mr V. R. Meredith (Crown Prosecutor) said: “1 am instructed by the Crown to offer no opposition to the applications.” Mr Tuck appeared for a majority of the applicants, Mr Dickson and Mr Thwaites representing one applicant. The secretary of the Freezing Workers’ Union, Mr Sill, was also present. Mr Luxford said he would take time to consider the applications. If it were thought to be in the public intterest that the applications should be granted, he would give judgment in the presence of the defendants. .He formally adjourned the Court until 2 p.m., remarking that if he decided that the applications should be granted, he would give his decision at 2.15 p.m. at the Auckland Prison.
