SHORTAGE OF FUEL

SEVERE HARDSHIPS ENDURED BY LONDONERS. ACTION TO INCREASE COAL SUPPLIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 24. The fuel position in London during the winter was extremely grave, said Lord Latham today in the House of Lords, when discussing the production and distribution of coal. Thousands of Londoners, he said, were without warmth for long periods, and the residents of one important metropolitan borough were obliged to go to bed after tea in order to keep warm. If the same position was not to arise next winter the Government must immediately introduce improved organisation for the distribution and storage of coal in advance. Lord Templemore announced thatja certain number of men were being released from the Army for service in the pits and that further measures were under consideration.
