“PEAK OF GLORY”
PASSED BY JAPANESE ACCORDING TO CHUNGKING SPOKESMAN. OPTIMISM RISING IN CHINA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) CHUNGKING, March 24. A Government spokesman declared today that Japan had reached her peak of military glory and that the fortunes of the war now will gradually turn in favour of the Allies. Chinese optimism has grown appreciably as a result of developments in the Pacific last week. 1 i The spokesman cited favourable factors and included General MacArthur’s transfer to Australia, successful convoys to Australia, the liaison between Chinese and British troops in Burma and the arrival of Sir Stafford Cripps in India.
