GERMAN 16TH ARMY ENTRAPPED AT STARAYA RUSSA. ATTEMPTS TO SMASH RING FRUSTRATED. LONDON. March 24. Attempts by parts of the German 16th Army entrapped at Staraya Russa to smash their way out of the Soviet ring have all been frustrated. One German division has been annihilated save for a few companies. The Germans are reported to be burning the bodies of their dead in an attempt to conceal their losses. Ten more of the big transport planes with which the Germans are endeavouring to supply their encircled forces have been destroyed in the last 48 hours. More villages have been liberated by the Russians on the south-western front and other local’, successes have been gained.
