DR. EVATT WELL PLEASED WITH PROGRESS IN MISSION TO WASHINGTON. AUSTRALIA AS ALLIED BASE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON. March 24. Dr. Evatt’s activities today indicated that big supply questions are being discussed with American officials. After seeing the Secretary for War, Mr Stimson, and the Secretary for the Navy. Colonel Knox, Dr. Evatt went to the White House for a long consultation with the Lend-Lease Director, Mr Harry Hopkins. It is noteworthy that Mr Hopkins is the key-man in handling 'and delivering military supplies, while the approval of Colonel Knox and Mr Stimson would probably be required before Mr Hopkins could act in connection with such largq quantities as would be involved in supplying a United Nations base in Australia. Dr. Evatt is known to be well pleased with the results of his efforts so far, which is taken as a further - indication of progress on supply questions, since Dr. Evatt, in a public statement, stressed the over-riding importance of a fast movement of supplies to Australia. Dr. Evatt also saw Lord Halifax. The New Zealand Minister, Mr Nash, lunched with a Supreme Court judge, Mr Justice Frankfurter.
