JAPANESE IN BURMA
SIGNS OF BIG-SCALE DRIVE I AGAINST BRITISH & CHINESE FORCES. AIR AND ARTILLERY UNITS CONCENTRATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) CHUNGKING, March 23. The United Press reports that Japanese parachute troops, bomber squadrons and artillery units appeared tonight to be starting a bigscale drive against the British and Chinese forces in Burma. FIERCELY RESISTED JAPANESE LANDING ATTEMPTS IN SOUTH CHINA. CHUNGKING, March 22. A communique states that Japanese warships steamed up the Min River past Foochow yesterday and shelled the town of Changmen, but they were forced to retire by a fierce counter-fire from the Chinese-held shore. Heavy fighting is going on at several points on the Kwantiing coast near Portuguese Macao, where the Japanese last week landed troops from warships. PITCHED BATTLE IN PROGRESS ALONG RIVER LINE. (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) CHUNGKING, March 23. A communique states that a pitched battle is in progress along the Pyu River, about 30 miles southward of Toungoo, after initial Chinese successes there on Friday.
