The Navy Department announced that Lieutenant-Commander Chester Smith has been awarded the Gold Star, equivalent to a second Navy Cross, on the basis of reports crediting his submarine with the sinking of eight enemy vessels. Lieutenant-Commander Smith received the Navy Cross on February 27, for earlier successes.
