GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS
AMERICAN SUBMARINE < COMMANDER EIGHT ENEMY VESSELS SUNK. AWARD OF GOLD STAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Dav. Noon.) WASHINGTON, March 17. The Navy Department announced that Lieutenant-Commander Chester Smith has been awarded the Gold Star, equivalent to a second Navy Cross, on the basis of reports crediting his submarine with the sinking of eight enemy vessels. Lieutenant-Commander Smith received the Navy Cross on February 27, for earlier successes.
