OUTLOOK IN BURMA
GENERAL ALEXANDER OPTIMISTIC BATTLE NOT STARTED YET. HOPES BASED ON NEW STRATEGY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) MANDALAY, March 17. “The new Allied strategy justifies an optimistic outlook in Burma,” said General Alexander, on being interviewed. “We are now trying to beat the Japanese at their own game,” he added. “In many ways they are as good an enemy as the Boche. They are well trained, with a campaign planned years ago. The Imperial forces at present are making contact with the enemy at Sheegy, in the Nyuanglebin area, where the enemy has been pushed back. Japanese infiltrations are being met by effective counter-measures. Despite the loss of Rangoon, the Battle for Burma has not even started yet.” Reviewing past fights, General Alexander said the British troops had fought magnificently. He added that “the Chinese forces who have recently joined the Allies in Burma are excellent and have very sound ideas about how to deal with the Japanese.”
