CHILEAN STEAMER
TORPEDOED AND SUNK NEAR NEW YORK REPORTED HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. SUFFERINGS OF ALLIED SEAMEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, March 16. The Chilean steamship Toltec was torpedoed and sunk 37 miles from New York. It is believed that 27 of the crew lost their lives. Twenty-nine survivors from a torpedoed Allied merchantman were landed at a port in eastern Canada by Canadian naval craft after three days in lifeboats, in which several of the crew were frozen to death. Twelve of the survivors were taken to hospital suffering from frostbite. An Allied vessel struck a rocky ledge on the coast of Nova Scotia, and was pounded to pieces. The entire crew of more than 50 was saved.
