BATTLE OF THE JAVA SEA

Allied Losses Include Five Cruisers FULL PARTICULARS OF DAMAGE TO ENEMY NOT YET KNOWN BRITISH ADMIRALTY COMMUNIQUE LONDON, Mardi 14. A communique issued today by the Admiralty describes the naval operations which took place in and near the Java Sea during the Battle of Java. It reports that the Royal Navy lost one cruiser and four destroyers, the Royal Australian Navy one cruiser and one sloop, the Netherlands Navy two cruisers and two destroyers, and the United States Navy one cruiser and one destroyer. Because of lack of information the communique does not give complete information of the losses suffered by the Japanese. In those operations of which it has reports one Japanese cruiser is believed to have been sunk, one last seen on fire and a third damaged, and one destroyer sunk and three seriously damaged. Of other operations against the enemy no reports at all have been received. The United States Navy Department, in a communique which was also issued today, states that the Japanese are believed to have had eight ships sunk or damaged.
