ABUSE OF LIQUOR
REAL MENACE IN WAR CONDITIONS. DECLARATION BY WELLINGTON CHURCH LEADERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Calling for action to check the impairment of the country's war effort through the abuse of liquor, prominent church leaders were unanimous, when approached today, in declaring that the increase in the liquor trade since the outbreak of war was becoming a real menace. There were occasions, it was stated, when many soldiers would be a hindrance rather than a help, in the event of a raid, because they were allowed to purchase drink to excess. Retailers had a patriotic duty to see that this should not be allowed to occur.
